“Published research supports hypnotherapy in being valuable in relieving symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome”

Hypnotherapy is designed to relax the conscious mind and allow the subconscious to respond to suggestions which are aimed at helping make positive changes. This form of communication aims to enhance, motivate and change perceptions of any difficulties a person is experiencing.

Hypnotherapy for IBS is designed as a complementary therapy to work alongside traditional medical treatment. In many cases, if you believe you may have IBS, it is very important to first consult a doctor, then to understand the best way hypnotherapy can work to help symptoms of IBS.  The hypnotherapist will discuss the nature of the illness and suggest the best approach.

During an initial session, the hypnotherapist will discuss any medical history of the patient. This will help to establish the basis for diagnosis of IBS, as well as help the hypnotherapist to provide the best form of treatment.

The objective of the sessions will be for the hypnotherapist to evoke relaxation and visualisation of a more appropriate process occurring in the gut, in order to promote a reduction in the symptoms experienced by the condition of IBS.

The visualisations will vary depending on the symptoms the client is experiencing. For example, if the client is experiencing constipation as one of the symptoms, the visualisation will help the flow of food through the gut to speed up.

As no two clients are the same, we would tailor the visualisation to the individual symptoms the client experiences. Symptoms like wind, constipation, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, bloating and of course pain are quite typical.

Your hypnotherapist will establish the level of pain that you experience, and review the various treatments to find the best way for you to reduce the pain until the treatment starts to take effect, usually 2 to 4 weeks. The hypnotherapist will encourage the patient to use an MP3 or a CD at home throughout the course of the treatment to aid the session’s effectiveness.

Your hypnotherapist will work with you to agree expectations and outline responsibilities of the hypnotherapist and you, the client, to ensure effective treatment.

All the symptoms, including discomfort, will be continually monitored during each session, until the end of the course of treatment when it will finally be evaluated.
